Hommage was commissioned by the McGill Chamber Orchestra with the aid of the Canada Council and was premiered by that ensemble on April 19, 1971. The work is based on the Grosse Fuge, Opus 133, by Beethoven. It was the intent of the composer to pay homage to that great musician on the two-hundredth anniversary of his birth.
