Bio of arrangers > MULLEN III, Frank

Frank Mullen III has taught classical and jazz guitar, orchestration and arranging at Mary Washington College, Franconia College, and the U.S. Armed Forces School of Music. He studied composition with Karel Husa at Ithaca College and with Allan Blank at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he earned his Master of Music degree in composition. He developed his arranging skills during his military service as a bandleader and arranger for United States Navy Bands, receiving the Navy Achievement Medal in 1985 for his band composition I Am the American Sailor.

While Frank presently focuses on the creation of works for solo guitar and guitar ensembles, he has experience in many fields of music. He has served as musical director for a variety of musical revues. While head composer for Audio Visions, Ltd., he wrote and produced video and broadcast soundtracks for productions by clients including the Environmental Protection Agency, the DuPont Corporation, and the United Way. He has composed and arranged big-band music for swing bands throughout the United States and Japan, and performed in seven countries.

Despite his activity in such diverse areas, Frank's first musical love remains the classical guitar. He currently provides concert works for the Virginia Commonwealth University Guitar Ensemble and the Richmond, Virginia, Community Guitar Ensemble, and is active as a guest conductor.
