Lorraine Desmarais is born in Montreal. In 1979, she obtained a Premier Prix in classical piano and followed this with tours of Canada, Asia, Russia and Europe, winning international acclaim as both pianist and jazz improviser.She won the Yamaha Grand Prize at the Montreal International Jazz Festival in 1984 and First Prize at the Great American Jazz Competition in Jacksonville in 1986. She was awarded a Felix at the 1985 Adisq Gala for her album Trio Lorraine Desmarais and, in 1991, received a First Prize in composition from SOCAN for her album Vision. Her work as a composer includes five jazz albums, many film scores and various themes for Radio-Canada broadcasts.
