Bio of composers > LONGTIN, Michel

Michel Longtin was born in Montreal in 1946. His early musical training took place with André Prévost and Jacques Hétu in Montreal and with Samuel Dolin in Toronto. Later he received the first PhD in composition awarded at the Université de Montréal following studies with Serge Garant. He received certificates in dramatic arts as well.

Music for the electronic medium dominated for a long time Longtin's output. His instrumental music is characterized by an expressionist and non abstract language. Michel Longtin has written music for film, chamber music and several works for orchestra, including La route des pèlerins reclus, which was commissioned by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and first performed in 1985.He was awarded the Jules-Léger Prize 1986 for New Chamber Music with Pohjatuuli, a work for twelve musicians.
