CALLAHAN, Kevin
Kevin Callahan (b. 1958) grew up in Boston, Massachusetts (USA). As a teenager, he picked up the guitar having been inspired by an uncle who was a singer-songwriter and by several aunts who sang professionally. Like many of his generation, Kevin played mostly pop and rock and it wasn't until he was in his mid-twenties when he discovered classical guitar. While he holds a BA in English from Dartmouth College, he pursued harmony, composition and orchestration during his undergraduate career. For a brief time, he left Dartmouth to study privately with Mitch Coodley (jazz guitar), Mick Goodrick (jazz guitar) and with Thomas McGah (harmony and counterpoint), head of the composition department at Berklee College of Music. When Kevin moved to Seattle in 1983, he did a year of intense study with the preeminent classical guitarist, Gary Bissiri.
At home in a variety of music genres, Kevin has performed or recorded with groups ranging from the Seattle Symphony to Dave Koz, Seattle Guitar Quartet, Seattle Guitar Trio, Arnold McCuller of the James Taylor Band, Greg Adams of Tower of Power, Roger Fisher of Heart, Rita Coolidge, Clarice Assad, the Assad Brothers and others.
As a composer, Kevin's works have been performed in the USA, Europe, Brazil, Japan and Australia. When not playing or writing music, Kevin is writing music software applications for iPhone and Mac. Kevin is also considered one of the pioneers in teaching music via video conferencing. More information can be found at his website:
