A Transcription and Translation

Instrucción de música sobre la guitarra espagñola
(Zaragoza, 1674/5 & 1697)

We proudly announce the publication of The Complete Guitar Works of Gaspar Sanz, transcribed and edited for classical guitar by Robert Strizich. This edition comprises a transcription and translation of the complete music and text from Sanz's Instrucción de música sobre la guitarra española ["Musical Instruction on the Spanish Guitar"], originally published in Zaragoza in 1674/1675 and 1697.

The Instrucción de música of Gaspar Sanz occupies an important position in the history of the guitar and its literature. Sanz's book not only contains some of the most beautiful music written for guitar during the Baroque era, but also has the distinction of being the most complete extant guitar treatise from the period. Still today, Sanz is perhaps the best known of all the baroque guitarists, and his music continues to inspire both players and composers. Many individual works by Sanz - such as the well-known "Canarios" - have been arranged numerous times for classical guitar and have even served as thematic material for 20th-century compositions such as Joaquín Rodrigo's Fantasia para un gentilhombre.

Nevertheless, in spite of the enduring reputation of Sanz's music, a complete and authoritative edition of his works, transcribed for classical guitar, has never been published or widely available in North America. The Complete Guitar Works of Gaspar Sanz, edited by Robert Strizich, addresses this long-standing need, and is destined to become, and remain, the standard edition of Sanz.

The transcriptions in this new edition adhere as closely as possible to the original baroque guitar versions of Sanz, preserving all the significant idiomatic features of his music (the original textures, harmonic structures, ornamentation, articulations and rasgueados) in versions that at the same time make full and satisfying use of the capabilities of the modern classical guitar. All of the solo guitar music from Sanz's Instrucción de musica is transcribed, including 21 rasgueado (strummed) pieces and 75 punteado (plucked) pieces. A detailed preface discusses the life and works of Sanz, the notation and performance practice of his music, and the baroque guitar in general; included in the preface is a section giving useful suggestions for interpretation. Sanz's two texts on guitar playing and figured-bass accompaniment (the latter replete with transcriptions of the original musical examples) are presented in accurate and eloquent translations from the original Spanish. This beautiful, elegant, 173-page hardbound edition also contains several facsimile illustrations of Sanz's original tablatures.

The editor, Robert Strizich, is a noted performer, composer and scholar, and is recognized as one of the foremost authorities on the baroque guitar. In the field of early music scholarship, Mr. Strizich is particularly well known for his biographical articles on guitarists of the 17th and 18th centuries, his studies of baroque guitar performance practice, and for his seminal edition of the complete works of the 17th-century French guitarist Robert de Visée. The Complete Guitar Works of Gaspar Sanz is the result of extensive scholarly research and Strizich's many years of experience as a skilled performer of the solo and ensemble literature for the baroque guitar.

"Robert Strizich has produced the definitive book on Sanz, as he did with Visée some years ago. This is an invaluable addition to the repertoire, a book that will be useful for concert players and students."
- David Tanenbaum, concert guitarist, and director of the guitar program at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music

"The book... is a masterpiece of scholarship, a paragon of practicality, and one that must be acquired by anyone who cares for this repertoire. It works, and it works well... highly recommended."
- Matanya Ophee, publisher of Editions Orphee (Columbus, Ohio)
